Civil engineer, Nepali Congress organiser and former mayor of Palungtar Municipality in Gorkha.
Deepak Babu Kandel was born on 22 February 1974 in Chyanglying, ward 9 of Gorkha. He trained as a civil engineer, first at Pulchowk Campus and then at Nepal Engineering College in Bhaktapur, and has worked in the profession since 1994.
His early jobs were survey and construction work on public projects. He spent a year on the Third Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Project in the far west, then five years as a civil overseer with the Ministry of Health, building and renovating health facilities in remote districts. Since 2004 he has run Vastu Mandap Consultancy in Nayabazar, Kathmandu.
Politics started earlier than the engineering career. He joined the Nepal Student Union while at school in Gorkha and was elected to its district committee in 1988. In 1992 he won the vice presidency of the Free Students’ Union at Pulchowk Campus, the first time the NSU took that post there. He has been a Nepali Congress member continuously since 2048 BS.
In 2074 BS he was elected the first mayor of Palungtar Municipality under the new local government structure. He served the full five year term to 2022, stood again in 2079 BS and finished second. He remains active in party organisation across Gorkha.
